Yes, you need a dual shaft PTO from a smaller tractor like a 1066( I think it will fit but I know it fits a 1466,1586 should be the same). Old one pulls out new one goes in after getting the linkages and bolts out. Be careful to get the splines on the coupler aligned when putting it back or you will break the cap in the front by the clutch. I don"t remember how we were told to turn the shaft, hopefully someone here can tell, We did this back in the 80"s and I forgot how. I think some but not all of the oil needs to be drained from the rear end. My brothers 1586 has a dual on it , I saw it yesterday when I was pulling a 27" field cultivator and needed to put fuel in,went through 75 gallons.

From my research it looks like the drive shaft in the 1586 is a different size (bigger?) than the 8-9-10-14 series tractors. It appears you need some sort of adapter coupler to make it work.

I don't know if an adapter is available, or if you have to manufacture one yourself.

Ok, I dug a little deeper. Yes you need an adapter, and it is something you have to make.

I found an old message that said Bates Corp may have some made up.

IH did make a tractor that used an intermediate shaft with two different size ends but I don't remember which one it was. When installing a PTO attachment to new 1586 we would use that shaft along with a PTO kit for a 1086.

Other than finding that shaft the easiest solution is to use a dual speed PTO that is the same style as the single speed that you have and simply swap the input shafts on the front of the PTO assemblies. That will also give you the opportunity to inspect the PTO clutch plates.

I think the shaft you have in mind was used on a 2+2.

I believe it was the 2+2 also, but may have been only the 3788 or maybe also the 3588. Not sure.
