Compression on 300

I have a 300 LP and when turning the engine over while holding my hand over the carburetor air intake I feel very little suction. I know from experience that it should suck my hand tightly against the air horn. Do ya think the engine is just plumb worn out or what could it be. I can get the engine to pop over but it won"t stay running when I release the starter. Thanks for any advise. Dan

Check the valves for proper clearance.
Next: get a compression tester and,
1.test for compression with throttle set wide open,
2.squirt about a teaspoon of motor oil into each spark plug opening,
3.spin the engine a few times, and then
4.re-test the compression.
If the test results increase markedly with the addition of oil, the engine likely needs an overhaul.

If you have messed with the starter switch, reverse the wires going to it.

I don't think it's electrical. I have power at the coil with the ignition on. I'll have to check Wayne's idea on the compression. Thanks for the input.
