F-20 Loud transmission

I posted a question earlier about the transmission being loud after I swapped the innards of two transmissions. I believe the noise is a gear on the top shaft sliding around a bit and catching on the transmission shaft below it (a loud chattering noise). I've put two top covers on (Thought maybe a fork had something to do with it) without a change ion the noise. Is there anything I can do? Will it get better once the tractor is running?
Is welding up a fork a possibility?
 
You need to move it with the top cover off to see what is making the noise. From teeth rubbing together when not in gear, to a bad bearing allowing shafts to be too close together, the reason for the noise needs to be found before operation. Straight cut gears do make noise (a lot of noise) but your description indicates interference between parts. Jim
 
I spun it with the top cover off. When I manually hold the gears in neutral the transmission is quiet, so that means one of my shifter forks isn't holding a gear in its correct neutral position (most likely 1st gear). Is there a way to slightly modify the forks position?
 
Upon further inspection this morning the transmission shaft is sitting 3/16 too far to the rear, thus allowing the sliding gears on the top shaft to hit it. My question is how do I move this transmission shaft toward the front of the motor.
I am NOT talking about the shaft with the pinion, I'm talking about the shaft directly below it, just to be clear.
This tractor needs to be finished for fair by Monday, so input is appreciated.
 
You could weld the detent notch in the fork rod shut and then grind a new notch. But it not lining up tells me something else is wrong. Think about what you had apart and then look there. Either that lower shaft is not seated home all the way or you left out a spacer. I don't have one apart I can look at for reference and I can't see yours from here. Oh, and if you need it done by Monday you should have started sooner. Don't get too upset about it. You have your whole life ahead of you yet.
 
If the shaft is really 3/16" too far to the rear, that means the front bearing is not fully seated on the shaft. Look inside, do you see a gap between the front bearing and the low speed gear? If so, try tightening the bolt that holds the coupler yoke to the shaft and see if that draws it together.
 
I have a Behlen overdrive in it...would it be effected if I tightened that bolt? That oil seal is right there.
 
Nah, she'll get done Cowman. Actually it's a he, "Uncle Sam" in fact, because I painted him on the 4th of July.
 
Well it actuall quieted down when I pushed the top cover back and tightened it. It's silent when I go uphill because the gears must slide a little to the back.
 
I'm worried to tighten that bolt any further because my coupler yoke will soon be pressing into my oil seal on my overdrive...
 
Tightening that bolt will not draw the yoke further into the overdrive but will draw the shaft towards the front IF it is not seated where it is supposed to be.
 
Well it is drawing it back, any further and it will damage my oil seal. Maybe I'll get gutsy an tighten it a little more...
