300 IPTO quit, need help

I went out and had mowed a couple of acres of hay this morning when the I hit a tough spot and jammed the haybine. Instead of the engine loading down I heard a loud rapid series of clunks or knocks and when I pushed the IPTO lever forward the noise stopped. I cleared the haybine and tried again, this time as soon as there was any load on the PTO the knocking began again. It makes several knocks spaced a bit apart and then stops turning and makes a fast rattling noise, like the same knock but closer together. I am wondering if the pressure plate and drive tube splines are damaged, or if it is something further back that I need to look for. Any advice will be much appreciated, I am starting to wonder if this tractor has some kind of curse on it, or something.

There are two different places that I would look. First I would remove the inspection cover from the bottom of the clutch housing and look inside for extra small/broken/grindings parts. With a good flashlight you can also take a look to see if there is something going on with the pressure plate and the PTO drive.

Next I would look at the seasonal disconnect coupling under the TA housing. You would have to drain the oil for this check.

Good luck

Did the noise sound like its at the rear of the tractor? Hard to say without being there. If it has the seasonal disconnect check that the dogs are not jumping apart. It springs the shift linkage when they do. Also at the oil level check plug at the front of the center housing. You can look through the hole with a light and see the teeth on the lower PTO drive gear. If the upper gear lost teeth you may see signs of damage on the lower one also. Not sure if to much oil would sling to have a helper see if the lower gear stops turning through the hole when the PTO stops. That could mean the PP, shaft splines or upper gear stripped.
Rear unit has plenty of parts to cause a problem also. May remove the engine spark plugs. Place trans in neutral. Engage the pto and by turning the pto shaft with whatever and the engine also, find or listen for the problem location.
Didn't see CharlieU post until after I posted. That's a good idea to look in the clutch compartment for metal cuttings. Shaft is hard to see in there.

Thank you both very much. I looked in the clutch cover in the field and everything looked okay but I was not sure, there were no metal bits. Came back and took the seasonal disconnect cover down, it was cracked and fell in two pieces at the first pair of bolts on the long tongue shaped part. I am guessing that the problem must be in the seasonal disconnect and I will see if I can get a split collar like was shown in Wardner's pictures of his SMTA. I will temporarily repair the disconnect cover with RTV for now, will see if I can get or make a cover eventually for that spot that does not have the lever on it. Thank you both for the help, I am glad to see that there are no filings or gear teeth floating around in there.

Do you have access to a parts diagram?
The PTO assembly is under attachments, and the seasonal dis-connect is under chassis.

Can someone post a link to the Wardner thread that contain those split collar pics. I have tried searching by subject and author as well (as a combination of both subject and author) and have not found those collar pics yet.

Curious minds want to see.

Thanks
