F-30 block question

ok, I am not sure whether I am confused, worried, or just plain befuddled. Was looking closely at the F-30 block today to try to find a casting date. There wasn't any, just the part number 487DE (or maybe 437DE, was a poor cast) and a large "M" just below it. Anyway, I found what appears to be a torch cut rod at the front, top of the block. just like the ones on an F-20/Regular, that is the pivot rod for the belt tensioner.

Looks like this had one at one point, and someone cut it off.......since I am not that familiar with the F-30, makes me wonder. Additionally, the flat boss on the carb side has no tamping or markings on it. totally blank.

Anyone have ideas or thoughts? I am beginning to wonder if this block is a replacement one.

437D is the correct part number for an F30/10-20 engine block. Since it does not have a serial number I would say it is a replacement block. F30 and 10-20 blocks are virtually identical, only difference being the 10-20 had the threaded hole for the fan pivot shaft, whereas the F30 block did not have that hole machined. It would make sense for IH to machine the hole in replacement blocks so they could be used for F30/W30/10-20

Thanks Kirk, that is what I was thinking but thought I would put it out here. This one had the pivot pin installed at one point, and someone took a torch to it to eliminate it.

Oh well, I am still pleased with the tractor. I wonder if they put the original HA pistons in it..........

My '35 F30 had a replacement block, there was no serial number on it. It had thrown a rod and punched a hole in both sides of the block. I did find a '35 block to use in it whenever I get around to rebuilding it.....

How close does the F-30 head gasket match the block? The 10-20 block has larger water holes, whereas the F-30 has smaller holes because it has a water pump.

The 10-20 block will work with a F-30 head if you use a 10-20 head gasket-my 1934 W-30 has a 10-20 block-IHC never threw away anything!
