Anyone have any tricks up their sleeve in adjusting the shhet metal on a SM. I am having difficulty in getting the seems to line up, The hood and gas tank on right side are inorrect as in height. I could adjust gas tank up with a shim on that side but was hoping someone has a "method". Thank you.

The gas tank is supposed to have rubber "washers" under it. Perhaps some are missing or worn. They are available from Steiners or about any supplier or if you have the right material you can make them yourself.

Pete - What CNKS says. Also.....if you have a Stage II Super M make sure the right side of the tank is not resting atop the Christmas tree valve.

Keep in mind also even perfect Farmall sheet metal will not have the precision fit of a car/truck of the same era. Minor misalignment between grille, hood and fuel tank is pretty much normal.

I have new rubber washers from steiner on the tank. They were actually a tad thicker than the ones I removed when I disassembled this ole girl. Going to fabricate a 1/4 inch shim and see if this is all its going to take to get this hood to fit correctly. Thanks for all.....

I don't understand the problem.

The hood and gas tank are self-aligning.

The lug for the hook is part of the tank, and if the hook is seated, the hood is aligned.

Exactly on the self align...The rib on the hood does not line up heigth wise with the seam on the gas tank right side only? It(hood) is 1/4" to high. I cannot apply enough pressure to get it where it needs to be. I have fabbed a 1/4" spacer today at work and going to see if that's the ticket tonight. The gas tank and hood look perfectly straight. And the gauge bracket is at its lowest point and still allow the throttle rod to be clear of rubbing.

Installed the 1/4" spacer between tank and rubber washer. I can now latch both rear spring hooks and the fit is great. Now to get the grill aligned to the hood. Thanks for all..

Put new rubbers under the radiator. The rubbers need to be the SAME EXACT height to get things to line up properly. When restoring you have to replace fuel tank and radiator rubbers as a set.

SFLEM..Already have new everything on this tractor...radiator, rubber washers, etc; etc; I'd be hard pressed to come up with a handful of items that haven't been repaired or replaced on this SM.
