Super H burns oil and smokes

My uncle's Super H smokes and burns oil. This tractor sits unused in our shed and he asked if I use it much,he is 87 and doesn't leave home much. Frankly, because of the oil consumption and smoking, I don't use it. Since he asked about it I thought I would try to get to the bottom of the problem. I inspected and cleaned the breather tube, it was mostly clogged but since I felt air pulses out of it before I cleaned it, I doubt if this was the total cause of the problem. It may be worn out but it does start easily. (12 volt conversion). Do you think the rings are just stuck? Is there a way to diagnose stuck rings or is there a way to attempt to get them freed up? I know a rebuild will take care of it. But how about something short of a rebuild. Should I do a compression check?

BTW. He calls it an H and the decals say Super H. I forgot to get a serial number but I can get that this weekend.

well, could be rings and valve guides. So, short of running a compression check, here is what you can try. 2 products, either Sea Foam or marvel Mystery oil in the gas can help free up stuck rings. You can also put some directly into each cylinder, and turn it over without the plugs in it. Then, let it sit for a week.

Lastly, after a week of soak, put the plugs back in, put some gas in the tank and go work the snot out of it. make sure you get it up to operating temp, and work it for an hour or two. If that doesn't free the rings up, then they are not stuck, and are just plain wore out.

My opinion. your mileage may vary and others may disagree.......

Maybe still do, but years ago most decal sets came with the Super decal and the regular decal too. AC WD came with the WD45 too. That is why there are a lot of tractors with the wrong sticker on them, a little paint, and a new decal, and you had a new tractor!

Add 2 qts of Dextron ATF to the crankcase oil and pull it for a hour or so. Did this to a 300 and it worked great. Change oil after and add 1 qt of Dextron instead of 1 of the qts of oil.

On the smoking and oil burning issue... Denial is not just a river in Egypt... Best odds are for the engine being just plum wore out. You got nothing to lose but time and a little $$$ trying the homebrew remedies for the stuck rings, but more than likely your efforts will not be rewarded...

The telltale sign of a Super H is the brake covers. If the covers are heavy cast with a button in the middle, that indicates they are disk brakes and you 99.9995% for sure have a Super H. There are rare exceptions, such as the odd "frankentractor" and the last 200-2000 1953 H's that left the factory with Super H rear ends.
