Farmall Super C - Carburetors - air cleaner

Just brought this C home. Normal neglected areas. Have The books. The carb does not have a load screw, only idle. Do others find this a problem ? Will a clean serviced air cleaner crate enuff restriction to richen the mix ?

After a Couple wasted days with this C it runs pretty good and is ready for my intended purpose.
I find it runs better with the choke closed a bit. The air cleaner is not installed.

It has a zenith carb and new tune up. Rebuilt carb by me. Have not done a compression test.
It runs better under load than not. Adjusting idle has some effect. Starts fast.

Bottem line is I want it to idle better. Shoud I focus on the carb or maybe valves ?
 
The choke should be all the way in. If it is even part way out it will prevent carb adjustment. High speed circuit probably still has goo in it preventing proper flow. Though not adjustable, with clean passages and jets, they are just fine. Float level is critical.
Adjust the valves when it will run W/O the choke. Jim
 
Thanks Jim, It runs acceptable with a little choke. I think you are correct about my carb cleaning, rebuilding expertise. So a higher fuel level makes it richer? Assuming it might be set to low.
 
Correct. 1/16" at a time. Check the passages first. A small wire must pass through easily as well as carb cleaner spraied through. Jim
 
Usually the C113/123 are too rich to begin with unless they are used for a long period of time. Short time periods result in carbon buildup. I think your carb needs to be cleaned again--disassemble and soak in real carb cleaner overnight. As Jim says if you need the choke on something is wrong. Idle is usually not a problem.
 
Installed the super clean redone air cleaner. It indeed did make a differance and I am now satisfied with the idle. Carb probably should be redone though.
