If a M has a engine oil dipstick in the block would that most likely be a 281 engine out of a 450 ? or was there a fit to put the dipstick in the block from M & W or some other aftermarket company ?

could be M&W add on or could be an engine out of an industrial or a road grader, I think those applications had the dipstick.

Could be several things. Block put in from another tractor, Power unit or crawler block, IH replacement block. Also IH and aftermarket made dipstick packages for M through early 400 blocks.
Then you can also find owner engineered dipsticks installed.
If you can find a casting number on the block above the oil filter I can probably tell you what it is.

The Farmall blocks all had a pad location for a dipstick. The one on the A and B is right below the oil pressure gauge so would be hard to use. On the H and M is near the base of the block just ahead of the oil filter. Anyone could have drilled the pad and put a dipstick in place. My 1941 W-4 has a dipstick which I am sure is NOT an IHC dipstick but obviously a farmer fitted feature.
