Power steering for Super M

I have a Super M with an F10 loader which I use for moving hay and logs for firewood. Empty the unit steers fine but when loaded it can be almost impossible on uneven ground. I am a small person and have injured my shoulder twice using this tractor so I MUST find a way to add power assist or sell the unit. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding what is available and where???

What dealer sells these? I know my local CaseIH dealer has no idea what I'm talking about or where to start looking for such a thing.

The parts to build yourself a "kit" can be purchased individually. S T E I N E R Tractor Parts has the torque generator, pump, brackets, pulleys, couplers.

Be prepared to spend the better part of $1500.

like mkirsch said, seek out the supplier he mentioned. you will need the torque generator, about 600 dollars, the port block, about 70 dollars, the coupler, the torque generator mounting bracket (it replaced the bracket that holds the temp and oil pressure gauges) and a priority valve to tap off your live hydraulic pump to power the unit. if you want a copy of the char lynn installation manual, shoot me an email i have them scanned on my computer and i'll send them to you.

I see quite a few of these power steering setups for IH m used
on eBay and in the ads on this site. You may find it there if you
search.

Used setups sell for $300 or so here. The torque generator lasts a long time - just put in new seals before you install it. There are lots of power steering pumps that will work.

My loader tractor is an M - I will add one thing. I am going to put a transmission cooler on the return line of mine. It is fine in the winter, but that fluid gets pretty hot during summer work and then you have to keep it idled higher for it to work better. Granted, most of the loader work is in the winter time, but I really need it to turn fast with the hay rake on it.

You will love it with the power steering. One finger turning just like it ought to be.

Private Message seems to be out of service so I need an email address as I am interested in the Char Lynn manual you mention. Thanks.

I have a complete Behlen power steering unit in the photo ads right now. Comes with pump, tank and torque generator.

Dad had a JD 60 with a Char-Lynn torque generator PS and Saginaw (GM) pump... it worked great. I have a Char-Lynn on my 240U with a flow divider off of the tractor's hydraulic pump and it has to be revved up for the PS and hydraulics to work at the same time. I highly recommend a separate pump, having had experience both ways.

Depends on the ratings of the pump. A 340's pump is roughly the same output as a Super C, which is 5 or 6 GPM as I recall. The steering needs about 3GPM if I'm not mistaken, and the 3GPM left really isn't much for other things.

A Super M's live pump is 12GPM so it should be okay.

The important thing is to connect the priority valve correctly. Priority circuit goes to steering. If you put the wrong circuit to the steering, you'll need to keep the tractor revved up to get anything.

IF his SM has a live pump... isn't it only the Stage 2 that has the live pump? If he has the belly pump, he will lose steering when he pushes in the clutch. Does this tractor have a separate pump for the loader? I have often thought of moving the priority valve on mine to the loader pump, as it's bigger than needed anyway, so a couple priority gallons split off for the PS isn't going to hurt. I'll never take the loader off the tractor and if it's never taken off this SM, that's another option.
