If one were to install a intake/exhaust manifold from either a F-30 or W-30 on a 10-20 would it than have the same HP as the F-30? I know the F-30 had a water pump and a little higher RPM's. Back in the day I always thought about doing that so I would have a 3 plow tractor. I am sure the transmission and rear end would take it OK. Thank you

THere are probably more internal changes as well as governed speed that need to be modified. Compression, and cam specifications are likely to be different as well. Putting more carb and manifold might add some, but not a 1/3 change in power. Jim

An F-30 head is different, the intake and exhaust valves are different size and stems are bigger than 10-20. The difference in manifold and carb also make a difference. If you swap enough parts you could probably make similar HP. The gearing is the biggest thing working against you in the old F series and W series and 10-20, 15-30, they are geared a little fast and that makes pulling that extra bottom a bit difficult.

Remember the horsepower ratings were based on Kerosene, not gasoline. So you need a f30 head, gas manifold, and K5 carb. And the water pump is essential to carry away the extra heat. High dome 8,000' pistons. You would easily double if not triple the HP of that engine( compared to the Kerosene rating). I personally witnessed a freshly built, similarly equipped F20 with high altitude pistons pull 54 horse belted to a dyno. Biggest issue was trying to keep the belt from slipping.

36F30 is spot on. The basic block for the 10-20, F30, and W30 are the same. Heads, Carb, Manifold are different. Now, add in the 8000 pistons, and make it tight and right, and you have a horse of a machine. That will out-lug a SM all day long.

Thank you for you for the replies. I did not realize
the the heads were different also. Back in 1963 and
64 when I started farming the only 2 tractors I had
were a 10-20 and a F30. The F 30 had a lot more
power than the 10-20. I wonder how hard it would be
to crank start it with the 8k pistons? I still have
the 10-20 got her all fixed up and take her to the
shows. Thanks again

Well, in my humble opinion, if you have the mag, plugs, and carb right, she should start with just a quick up-pull. I have an F-14 with 5000 pistons in her, and she is NOT a treat to crank. My F-30 is a HA (High altitude), but I don't know whether the pistons are 5000 or 8000. I have no issues starting my F-30; although I don't have to sit there and spin it around either. 2 slow, easy revolutions with the choke on and mag off. then half choke, mag set, and shr usually fires on the first or 2nd pull. Always a 1/2 to 1/4 turn.

Tom: That is kind of how I start mu 10-20. 2 1/4
turns with the mag off and choke on than usually
just 1 or 2 1/4 turns with the mag on and choke off
Iam going to try and leave her on 1//2 choke like
you do when i put the mag on might keep running
smoother at first.

I have 8's in my 30, Its starts fine, but you can tell they're in there for sure. 1 rev with full choke gets gas dripping from the carb drain and usually 2 more revs and its runnin. Cranking 284 cubic inches can be a chore if somethings off a bit.
