differences in M and Super M

Other than the difference in the piston size, what are the differences? Stroke, differneces in the head, gearing? Just curious, thanks for the info
 
Only difference in the last M tractors when built and the first SM tractors when built was a 1/8 inch bigger bore in a SM, different gear speeds in 2 to 4 and reverse gears. Also the emblem and emblem mounting holes on the grill and some tractor decals. If you go earlier on a M or later on a SM more changes are found.
Forgot to mention choke levers on different sides of the carburetors and some casting numbers.
 
The very late m's also had disc brakes, the newer style timing gear cover to handle a live pump, and heavier camshaft gear. My late m also has a service meter too ( basically an hour meter)
 
The most noticeable differences except for power is that the SM 3rd gear is as fast as M 4th, and SM 4th is about 1.25-1.5 MPH faster than M 4th. Most, including me, will tell you that the disk brakes in the late M and SM are a step backwards.
 
and also the super's came out with sealed beam headlights, as the standard's had a bulb.
 
Bigger differential carrier bearings and bigger input shaft bearings. 12" clutch instead of 11" clutch. Also what the other posts said.
 
Centex late M tractors had the same parts you mentioned. Also the early SM tractors had lights just like a M and not the sealed beam starting off like another posted. Original poster needs to be more specific on the question. Several pages could be wrote on changes from the first M to the last and also the same about the first SM to the last one. Less if the SMTA is not included in that.
 
That's true. I had Stage 1 SM and it did have the earlier style light but I didn't think much of it at the time.

I did not know that late M's had the beefed internals.
 
True for most of them. But real late M tractors have the air cleaner with the bigger opening and pipe to carb like the supers. Also the thicker cast front wheels.
