1949 Farmall

I have become the owner of a tractor which is described to me a 1949 Farmall model A. The former owner was an elderly man who kept it in a shed and used it to mow a piece of land that I bought from him. I got the tractor when I bought the land. Here are my questions.

How do I learn more about this tractor?

How do I value it so I can sell it?

Where would I find a buyer.

Thanks,

Brad

Well you have come to the right spot for information! The Farmall A is a cool little tractor made for doing the small chores around the farm and cultivating. It's offset which allows the operator to view row crops much easier and allowed for easier more accurate cultivating. If it's an A, not a Super A, it does not have live hydraulics and most have a slightly smaller hp engine. Today many people use the A as their tractor to plow snow, mow, cultivate small crops. I am an "M" guy so I'm sure you will get more info from others here who have more knowledge than I.

I would start with external_link to get your basic information on the engine, transmission, serial number break down, pictures, hp break downs, etc..., your basic information. You can explore this site, take a look at the "Research and Info" section to the left of the screen. And I would yahoo/google search "Farmall A" to get more history/information on that particular tractor and its uses.

As far as value, post a picture here on this site and we can help narrow it down a little but there are many factors. Does it start easy, whats the oil pressure, does it skip in gear, what are the condition of the tires, hows the paint, any major leaks...these are all things to consider, we will do our best if we have picture.

Finding a buyer depends on your location, I would look at craigslist and external_link for listing, I also have a local magazine that specializes in selling all types of equipment and many auction houses.

Best of luck with your research and upload a picture, we love pictures! ~Anthony

Try this website, it will give you the overall history of the tractor, http://www.nnalert.com/farmall-A.html. Also, if you have to know more about the tractor itself, buy the operators and service manual for the tractor, it will have everything you need. They have them for sale on this site I believe. ~Anthony

Have you started it? If he was using it to mow, does it have a belly mower? With a belly mower, generally you can get around 1500 around here (Indiana). Still, they are great tractors. While they are very inexpensive right now, I believe the value of them will climb significantly in the years to come, especially when compared to what's offered any more. I don't know your needs, but I'd recommend keeping it if you do many chores around your new land. The new tractors are fine, but they don't really handle the rigors of time very well and don't handle heavier chores (pulling carts, wagons or small trees) nearly as well as something like an SA. You might be glad you kept it for odd jobs in the years to come.

Regardless, this is one of the best free/inexpensive places to sell an old farmall. Craigslist is also a good start to sell something like a tractor, due to the localized nature.

Good luck!
