H Brake issue

On my H I took the covers off and the brake bands are both really nice and I can get the right side set up and it works great with lots of adjustment left. I get to the left side and I have it adjusted all the way I can and have even removed the jam nut to get a bit more but I still cant get it close to set up like the right side and idea why I cant adjust the left side? Thanks Paul

if both bands are in good shape, check the key in the actuating arm as i have seen them shear off and cant adjust.

The bands have been known to be long or short (thus not correct).an eccentric shaft made to fit the stationary anchor so it could be turned and locked (setscrew or ?) would allow adjustment for this issue. A long band can"t be tightened, and a short band won"t go on. Three bears issue. I believe adjustment at the anchor is the answer. JIm

On the bottom of the brake housing, did you loosen the lock-nut, run up the square-head screw to touch, then back off 3/4 turn, then re-tigthen the lock-nut? That positions the band to then be adjusted.

The band that won't adjust is an aftermarket piece. Look at the eye on the top of the band. Is it a separate riveted on piece or is it a rolled over piece of the band ?

My guess is that is a rolled over piece of the band. I have 'fixed' the problem by cutting the band, overlapping the cut ends, and rewelding it shorter. At the same time I rewelded the eye since the three spot welds won't hold if you actually plan on using this tractor.

Brakes are important. Make sure you know what you are doing if you decide to shorten the band.
