Farmall M Electrical

Hi all, I have a 1946 Farmall M I am restoring. First things first, I am in Australia so it was imported back in the day.

It has a 6 volt Delco Remy starter, it has a Lucas 6 volt generator and Lucas regulator.

It has its original IHC H4 Magneto but missing the cut off switch on the tractor. Apparently Lucas generators were put on these when they came to Australia.

The wiring on the rest of the tractor looks to be really bodgied up from years of fix it's and the previous owners efforts to bypass the 6 volt and start it on a 12 volt battery with no charging circuit hooked up.

This was a mess so I have now stripped all the wiring out and ready to start afresh.

So now the question;

1. If I use the original 6v Lucas generator setup, where can I get details on the wiring loom or purchase a wiring loom and bits to suit this. Does anyone make looms for this setup?

2. If I don't use the original Lucas setup then I would still like to retain its originality by way of the original American setup and would like to know what is that 6v setup?

Geeez it's hard to get any info on this stuff.

Make sense?

Appreciate guidance from those far more knowledgable than me.

Thanks in advance.

Phil

Hi Phil. sounds about like mine when it first arrived, a total mess. But the guy managed to start it with his 12 volt battery from his chevy silverado, to unload it. He drove it in the shop, and there it sat till I got it all squared away. More $$. Went and bought a heavy cranking amp 6 volt battery, made some new battery cables from some welding lead, rewired everything correctly, and she fired right up.

Here is the schematic you want to use if you have a magneto ignition. This of course is for a delco gen. Not sure how different they are from the lucus. You'll also notice that it has a cut-out and not a regulator.

I got my wiring harness from these people. They do good work.

With a Lucas system and Lucas light switch it is beyond our direct input. The attached diagrams might help some, but abundant interpretation is needed on the switch and Lucas system.
The 46 vintage would have the system described in the diagram previously supplied, (no regulator)
To go to US original, you will need:
A light switch (4 position -LHDB- Low charge High Charge, Dim lights, Bright lights.
A cutout relay for the generator, and the generator.
Probably a belt and brackets for the gen as well.
If you want US all the way you might aldo need light fixtures.

A fellow Australian with the handle SadFarmall has several Farmalls with Lucas systems in operation. I would search the archives to get an opportunity to contact him. (he has not been posting lately.) Jim

G'day, SadFarmall here. If you need the full Lucas diagram, with pictures, I have a Farmall AM Parts Catalogue. You should note, however, that (usually) if you have Delco starter, the tractor should also have a Delco generator. I have the Lucas catalogue and diagrams of everything you need for a Lucas set up. Beware of the generator mounting brackets! The mounting bracket and belt adjusting arm for the Lucas generator will NOT work for Delco-Remy or vice versa. You should be able to e-mail me through modern view and I will send you what information I have. The loom is easy. I just bought the wire for mine and made it up. Can make one for you if you like, heaps of wire left over.
Cheers,
SadFarmall
