the top ring groove on my m-w pistons for the 450 are looser them the rest of the grooves. Will these still work or should I get new ones? What is a good replacement for the m-w's? Thanks Rusty

There is supposed to be more ring clearance in the top grove than the others. Here are the specs directly from the IH service manual.

top .0035-.005
second .002.-0035
third .002-.0035
oil .0015-.003

You can have the top groove machined and install a spacer. Makes the piston like new. Hastings still makes spacers. I had a machine shop did it for 35yrs. My email is open.

need a spec. without piston in hand pretty hard to give an answer. this is the groove that wears the most also.
