IH 100 sickle mower

Mounted the mower on the 400 Fast Hitch. Lowered the sickle down to the ground and a quart of water runs out of balanced head casting.

The mower was outside with the bar in the transport position.

Is this normal?

In the parts diagram, it shows the bottom of the casting being open. I have put the mower inside since this happen

Well, no. Does it have the little metal plug in the top of the balanced head? I've never had water run out of one of mine. Even in summer when they are outside a lot.

It would have been better had they let the bar sit in the mowing position - the water would run through the head and out the bottom. When left in the transport position the casting can fill 1/4 full of water with no way for it to drain out - the holes are at the top and bottom. Putting it at a 45 degree angle allows the water to accumulate.

Did it sit through the winter this way?

Yes it did sit outside over winter. This is in SE South Dakota where it hasn't rained and snowed that much until recently. It is well greased so maybe its okay inside. I was surprised when the water ran out.
