H Brake shaft oil seal

I have the brake drum off, but can"t get the bearing retainer off. My idea is to get a pulley puller on it, but I"m struggling a little bit. I"m trying to replace the oil seal. Do I stay the course or is there a trick that I am missing here. Thanks in advance.

dont try and remove the cast retainer!!! just pick the old seal out. you need to remove the bull gear inside to get that retainer out. it looks like it just comes out easy, but it dont.

Hmm, I learned that lesson once. Clean the grease and crap off and you will see tapped holes to use to pull the retainer. Don't use them!!!

Screw some screws into the seal and use them to pull the seal out.

If you use a puller on that bearing retainer without going inside the transmission to remove the bull gear, you will break the bearing retainer. Then you will have a real problem. As others said, dig the seal out by drilling and installing screws in the seal so you can get a hold on it.

X1000!

Stop where you are! Do NOT attempt to pull the retainer!

Maybe you can use the trick where you drill a screw into the seal, then use a slide hammer to coax it out?

Thanks. I teach a restoration class with high school students and every year we do a new tractor. This is my second tractor, but first Farmall H so I always tell the students use your resources and you can"t know everything. I"ve had them on this site already and I want to thank all of you for your replies. We learn together on these projects. Once again thank you.

The original seal is a double seal inside of an outer skin. You need to get that outer part out also as I have heard of some getting the seals out and then the new seal would not fit as they did not take out all of old one.

I agree with the other posters do not try to pull the retainers more than Likely you'll break them. If the screw trick doesn't work then CAREFULLY cut them out with a hammer and chisel

More than likely? It would be impossible to not break the back piece off.
