I have. an IH M tractor I am changing from a magneto timing of
35 to a electronic distributor . What degree of timing do I need ?
the new electronic distributor only advance to 23 degree .

I'm certainly not an expert on magnetos, but I do know that a magneto is actually "retarded" when at rest. This is to allow for much easier hand cranking and also to prevent the "kickback" that can break your wrist or arm. Since the magneto is in this retarded state, it will require that 35 degrees of advance to get the timing where it needs to be.

The battery ignition distributor only needs the 23 degrees of advance to get the timing into the same place as the magneto. Anyhow, that is my theory.
