Hello
haven"t starter my SC in a few months. Now the starter doesn"t engage. It makes a whining sound. Any ideas.
Thanks and happy thanksgiving

Until i replaced the starter on mine a few years ago I had to tap it occasionally with a hammer to get things lined up inside. This may or not help your situation though.

She's gummed up. My M does that in the winter. After it runs a bit and heats things up the old goo on the shaft loosns up and lets her work right. Mine isn't bad enough to pull - if it does it I stop and crank again and it works.

Pull the starter and spray the gear end with brake cleaner and clean it good. Then spray a little chain lube on it and put it back in. Make sure there is full amperage getting to the starter. If it is just barely spinning it will not kick the gear out. Then you jut have a weak electric motor spinning. I've also used the torch to heat up the goo and cleaned it off.

Is your main seal back there leaking?

Poor battery cable connections or a weak battery will cause that. Since you have started it in a couple months good chance you have one or more of those including rust where the starter bolts on

While you have it out clean up the commutator and new brushes and maybe the bushings also then your starter will last for many more yrs.
