450 Mystery Follow-up

Well it's been about two weeks since I posted, and I finally got the 450 LP running. Hadn't run in almost a month. The engine started missing one day, got steadily worse, and then quit on me, and wouldn't hit a lick. Tried everything 'til I determined it had no fire at the plugs. Thanks for all the suggestions, I used them to track down the problem....it turned out to be that the distributor wasn't getting a good ground to the engine. I ran a ground wire from the body of the distributor to a bracket on the head--problem solved! Btw, I had been using only one of the two factory hold-down clamps that retain the distributor, and now maybe I know why they used two, one on each side, when one would "do". Again, thanks for all the help, Hugh.

Thanks for the info of the solution. Not a common ground fault, but it might be more common than realized!! Jim

I think it should have both clamps as the body is short so it may move a bit.

Also did you remove and replace one of the breaker plate screws to do this???

It may very well just need to be properly cleaned up and would fine without the extra wire.

That's probably true, I did clean it up real good before I put it back on, but the ground wire was just a way of not having to work anymore in freezing temps trying to get it started--it was an insurance policy! Thanks, Hugh
