International 544 wiring diagram

Looking for a full wiring schematic for the gas 544. My tractor starts when the starter is engaged but stops when starter disengaged.

Sounds like your ignition wire is connected to the starter terminal not the ignition terminal or your ignition wire has a break in it.

The starter solinoid has a terminal on it intended to bypass the resistor while the starter is cranking: it has 12V on it when (and only when) the solinoid is engaged. You have your coil connected to that terminal but do not have a resistor installed. If you have a 12V coil that does not require a resistor connect the coil + terminal directly to switched 12V. If your coil requires a resistor install one, connecting one end of it to the coil + and the other to switched 12 (leaving the connection to the solinoid in place).

You will note in that wiring diagram, there is no resistor mounted at the coil. The multi colored wire that is a dual wire at the starter solenoid, is a resistance wire and runs up to the junction block that is powered up from the ign switch. Check to see that you have power at that double wire where it connects to starter solenoid with key on. Like others have said, when starter is engaged it feeds battery voltage to the coil but when running the coil is fed through that resistance wire. Older tractors had a ballast resistor mounted right near coil and did same job but was wired slightly differently.

When you find that the wire between the junction block and the starter solenoid is broken you can replace it with normal copper wire and an external resistor for an older tractor. 460, 560, early 706 and such.
