pressure plate opinions

Looking for opinions I've had people tell me they have put new clutch disks and pressure plates in and never adjusted the clutch release fingers and I've had people tell me they have put new clutches in.and adjust the release fingers every time to compensate for machining on the flywheel. What do you do?

every PP i ever bought had a tag that said fingers adjusted from factory so don't mess. if the face of the flywheel is ground the step where the PP bolts on has to have the same amt of material taken off to keep the dimension correct.

Removed and inspected and replaced back in my H pressure plate and clutch. I found that if I adjusted the figners per the clutch adjustment manual, the bench adjustment procedure, at a gap of 9/16", it would not work. I found that I had to install everything in the tractor, then set fingers at a 3/16" gap. That works great. Have no idea why.

Flywheel is stepped. Your machine shop will resurface flywheel. Then need to resurface pressure plate mounting surface to the required difference. Keep in mind that the when the flywheel is resurfaced you lose some adj length on clutch adjustment linkage/rod. Pressure plate fingers are set at factory and should not be moved.

I've installed many new clutch and pressure plates. Cars, trucks, and tractors. Never have I needed to adjust the fingers.

I bought a clutch from this site a year or two ago. The fingers were no-where near where they should have been. One was 1/4" lower than the others. It also had a paper that said it was adjusted at the factory and not to adjust. If I had listened to that, I would have had an inoperable clutch when I was done. Moral of the story? Always check any "factory" adjustments on all parts if you want a useable repair.
I also want to say this post is not a dig on Yesterday's Tractors. The clutch was of good quality and (after adjusting it) works great.

So, why not check it? Just because Joe Blow has put them in and not adjusted/checked the fingers doesnt mean it was right! Last PP I bought and installed wasnt anywhere near correct, and it was from the "mighty IH dealer"! Clutch and PP I got from my local place was suppose to be set too! Even had the little sticker saying not to adjust, guess what, it was wrong too! If it wrong, and you assume its right, youll have to split again, on some models anyways, so why risk it?

(quoted from post at 09:44:21 12/18/13) Never have I needed to adjust the fingers.
There was a time when virtually everyone could honestly make that statement. It just doesn't seem to be true any more. Even if you don't have the specs, it only takes a minute to make sure they are all the same. These days, it seems they usually won't be.

Ya know in the fifty plus years i have been putting clutches inthe only clutches i have had to adjust the fingers on were the ones i did the rebuild on myself . and just how many of you have ever BUILT a clutch from the get go ??? . And how many of you have the flywheel re GROUND and heres the other kicker is finding a machine shop that really knows how to turn or i should say grind a flywheel correctly , this has been my only problems . I had a problem one time at my buddy's shop where he was recovering from open heart surgery and was letting his kid run the shop . I took a flywheel up to have done on a rush job and had i not been standing there watching over him i would have had a problem as he was one of them KNOW IT ALL's . And it was a good thing that his dad came down to talk to me while i was waiting since he would not listen and true the stone BEFORE he started to grind and i had a radius where the disc would set and he did not cut the step correctly . .And also a lot of the problems you guys are running into is the fact that just how many times has that flywheel been cut down . I know for a fact that the flywheel on my 806 is on it's last clutch and will need replaced on the next clutch job. And on that one we had a little problem getting the linkage to fall into line along with all the ware at the pins and clutch pedal but hey she has close to ten thousand hours on her and had extensive field testing .
