ih 656 ta problems

Have an ih 656 row crop narrow front gasser, the ta starts slipping and bogs the tractor down and trys to kill the motor when i put the ta ahead for road travel, or anytime i want to speed up. it still works fine with the ta pulled back. Talked to the ih dealer yesterday, hes hard to get ahold of, and he said most likely the ta clutch. I can split the tractor and fix it, does his diagnosis sound like the right one? Any comments would be appreciated, im gonna start tearing her down today.

You should try adjusting the linkage per the book before you tear it apart and spend a hefty amount of money. Adjusting the TA is pretty easy and free. It may not be the adjustment but its worth a try.

That dont sound right ,i agree with Farmall Boy get an operators manual and make sure its adjusted properly before you try to take it apart.

I agree that he should check the adjustment first as it is easy to do, but I can"t think of a way that TA clutch misadjustment could cause the engine to bog down. I"m betting on a buggered-up TA clutch throwout bearing. Misadjustment of the linkage can wreck that. If it"s seized up then engaging the TA clutch could load the engine.

That doesn't sound like any TA problem I've ever heard of before.

"Bogs down" and "slips" are two separate, completely opposite, problems in my book. I don't think you can bog down if the TA is slipping.

If the TA clutch is slipping, the tractor will act like it's driving around with the TA lever back all the time. It won't bog down and try to kill the tractor.

Does it do this in all gears or just 5th?

I have seen a 666 do exactly that. The overrunning clutch was locking the carrier solid so it would not turn in either direction, thus low side works fine. Soon as you put lever ahead the direct drive tries to take ahold , slips the ta clutch for just a bit and stalls engine. Pretty easy to check by pulling the little cover over the center of TA housing, push clutch pedal in and the TA carrier should be able to rotate one in normal direction of rotation.

It is even easier to check than pulling the cover. Does the tractor free wheel going down hill with the TA lever pulled back? If not the overrunning clutch is seized.

Checked it out today, got a few questions to answer here haha. Yes, it happens in all gears, and yes it was adjusted and that didnt seem to help, got it almost split today, was quite a job by myself. Got all the bolts out, but it didnt split easily, put a few back in, will resume work tomorrow, got cows to feed tonight.
