got a 544 with a c200 gas engine -- its hard to start -- it will only try to start with no throttle-- it fires on one cyl right away but wont keep going-- after about twenty trys it will go to two cyls. once runing on two it will go on three then four once warmed up it runs fine-- whats up with that? thank you in advance for any info -- Deacon Roy

Ya did not say when the last major tune up was done or the ing. timing was checked and like others have said that little black knob on the face of the dash that might say CHOKE , ya need to pull it all the way out and once it lights off then ya push it in about half way till she starts to warm up in about two or three min. Try and set the throttle just a whisker off dead idle and PULL THE CHOKE then start it and see how that works out . Tractors can be more fussy then Wimmen and ya have to learn there quarks . Our 706 will start with out the choke IF you get the throttle set just wright and ya don't get in a hurry and let them warm up for five or ten min. IF ya don't get them on the first try then ya got to CHOKE them .

That could be a number of problems. I would make sure you have a good blue/white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more. I that tractor I do not know if it has the carb drain plug or not or fuel pump. But if it has the drain plug and is a gravity flow system make sure you have a good steady flow of gas out of the carb for a few minutes. Catch it to look for water /dirt etc. You might also pull the air tube off between the carb and air cleaner and hold you hand over the carb and try to start it. You should get a good suction when you do and also should get gas on your hand. If you do not have both you may have a manifold gasket problem or low compression

Didn"t you post this once before? In any case, check your points and your timing. On my C200 this set of symptoms usually means that the point gap has opened up.

Just get some new plugs and while you are changing them take a compression test could be bad carb, valve setting, carb, vacuum leak. But a quick oompression check and plugs would be a good quick fix

it has pertronics ign. (no points) the wire is not connected to the bottom of the carb. new wires =cap is good rotor is good new plugs (gap is 23-25)it is a utility so it has a fuel pump -- will look at fuel flow and pump pressure -- valve settings next -- what do they do to the carb. to make it run with-out wire hooked-up? thanks to all!

After trying all the suggestions you have, if that doesn't fix it, one more thing you might try.

After you get it running and warm....spray some either around the intake manifold (not in the intake).....if the engine surges when you do this you could have a bad gasket around the intake manifold.
