Good plow for a W9

Ok everyone, got my W9 home a few weeks ago. Already started looking for a trailer plow for behind it. I dont want to work it to death, just something to have fun with. I have a #8 2 bottom, but Im pretty sure that would look rather "silly" behind this beast. I would really like to find a trailer disc plow for behind it, as Ive only ever seen one set of them around my area. So whats everyones thoughts?

depending on your area the disc plow just wont cut it better check around before you but one and then find out it dont work in your sols to be safe get a 4 bottom.

3-16 would be modest in most soils. 4-14 or 4-16 will also be fine and modest in medium soils. Playing is a great way to look at it. Jim

i had a 3-18 oliver trailer plow for my w-9, really worked well behind it. wish i never got rid of that plow now.

Back in the day we had a #60 4X14, Found out that by removing 1 bottom we could get more acres plowed in a day. We had a lot of clay soil. Still have the tractor and the plow.

I have a #16 McCormick 3 bottom 16in., rope trip that plows real well in all types of ground and would be good for a W-9

Appreciate the responses guys. Dumb question, but does rear tire width have any effect on how wide of bottom you should use?

those tractors are rated for 4/16's. don't forget you have 2nd gear if it pulls hard in 3rd. you also have first gear for a heavy heavy pull , but I hardly think you would go down to 1st very often, plus its a bit slow for plowing, but for a short distance it don't matter. that's when the next generation 60 series T.A.tractors come into play.

Also, keep in mind that the W9 is a standard tread tractor. The rear wheel width is non-adjustable, so to do it right, you need a plow with an "on-land" hitch.

The side draft of pulling a 3-bottom or 4-bottom plow with a W9 on-land might make your day long and tiring, as you fight to keep the tractor going straight.

There is no problem running 18.4" wide tires in 14" furrows.

An on-land hitch, set up correctly, eliminates that side pull. If it didn't, no one would have ever used it.

For fun use only a 4 bottom. I pull a 5 x 14" and that is what was used all it"s life. Second gear. Do not use an on land hitch, instead pull from the swinging drawbar and run the right wheels in the furrow.

(quoted from post at 15:41:41 01/28/14) I can't say I have ever seen an onland plow from the letter series era.

Never saw one then either... not until maybe the late '60/early '70s when 6, 7 and 8 bottoms and duals on tractors became more common.
