What Year and Model IH Farmall Do I Have?

I just purchased what I thought was a IH Little A Super. The serial number plate that is supposed to be on the seat bracket is missing. I would like help determining exactly what I have.

There are two numbers (cast) on the chassis (right side, operator view) that I think may help with identification.

One is high on the chassis, just under the fuel tank behind two hydraulic lines. That number is 354352. 1.24.J follows that number

The second number is cast low on the chassis down and a little to the left of the number above. This number is 351687-R4.

Other significant information.... There is a water pump behind the fan.

There is also (and I don't know if this is a modification by some owner), a spacer (about 1.25 inches showing) between the sheet metal covering the radiator and the sheet metal covering the engine. It is put on with pop rivets.

Thanks in advance for any information you may provide...

(quoted from post at 17:49:56 02/14/14) can you post a picture?

I'll try..

I put a picture in the "Upload Photos" section, but it didn't post with this comment.. What else do I need to do?

(quoted from post at 18:16:53 02/14/14) the 1.24.J will tell us that part was cast on Jan 24, 1940. With the hydraulics and a water pump it might be a super A with that 1 part replaced over the years.

I think that designation was on the hydraulics unit (I'll check in the morning). If so, I must have mis-read the letter.

o k, at the bottom of e-mail , there is a add photo, click on that, browse and select your photo and click upload, and wait for it, then click continue and post

354352 hydraulic block wasn"t around in 1940. Double check it. Does the 354352 have a R1, 2 or ETC on the end? 351687R4 center tube is probably in the 52 to 54 time area.

I don't remember seeing more after 354352 (besides the date code), but I'll look again in the morning... I'll also look for more date codes on the other castings.

I believe engine serial no. is stamped in block approximately below no. 1 spark plug, on a machined pad . you may have to scrape grease, paint ect. to see it. if I'm wrong let me know as it has been several years since I've looked at a super A.

Water pump behind the fan is not a SA Engine their water pump was on the block hooked to the lower outlet in the radiator. You say your water pump is hooked to the head behind the fan and then the altering of the fan shroud means a later engine has been installed which is possible remember over the yers many things could have been changed. What kind of a seat do you have a bench type or a pan that unhooks and tilts to the upright

I think you may have a 140. That is the C-135 engine. Not the C-123 or C-113. Someone may have pieced this together. It still can be a nice tractor. Don't be disappointed.

Well.... you are right in saying that someone pieced the tractor together. The engine IS a 123 CID though, as evidenced by that designation to the left of the engine serial number. Date codes found on other castings are all 1951 dates.

I had mis-read the date code. It was actually 1.24.U, which is 1951. The original engine on this tractor was replaced with a 123 CID engine, as evidenced by that designation to the left of the serial number boss. The serial number of the engine is 73218.

The 354352 number doesn't have anything following it. After further inspection, all the date codes I found are 1951 castings (hydraulics case, transmission and tube). I have learned a lot more from looking more closely at the tractor and researching online information. Another post in this thread will provide that information.

First of all, thank all of you for your interest and information.

After reading your input, and doing more online research and closer inspection of the tractor, I have come to the following conclusion...

I believe this is a 1951 or 1952 Super A, as evidenced by the casting dates on the transmission (10.16.W), hydraulics case (1.24.U) and tube (10.8.W). It could be a 1952 because of the later casting date on the tube.

The original engine (which would have been a C-113) has been replaced with a later model C-123, as evidenced by the (cast) "C 123" designation to the left of the serial number boss near the number one cylinder plug hole. The engine serial number is 73218 (no prefix). The engine has a water pump.

The engine replacement also explains the spacer between the engine cover and the grill sheet metal (see a previous photo). The original sheet metal over the engine didn't reach to the grill sheet metal after the engine replacement.

I am now on a mission, using the engine serial number, to find out what year this engine was manufactured.

Can anyone help me with that?

I have called a IH/Case dealer and they told me they didn't have engine serial number records.

Thanks again for all your insight and help. I would not have learned as much as I now know without your help.

Engine is probably a early in year, maybe February 59. Since I don't know what unit it came from I can't be sure.

If I may ask, what leads you to think that month and year?

Thanks....

Because if it came from a tractor with that serial number it was probably from a 140 or 240.
If you look at the engine serial numbers the one for each month is the beginning number. See the month serial numbers 73218 will be between.
