C-123 rear main seal again

After reading past messages on this subject I still am not sold on the 2 piece felt seal for the rear main crank seal. I take it no one has come up with a better seal system. How about some tips on seal installation. Do I presoak the seals in oil? Do I maybe put some silicone on back and top side of seal to "stiffin " it up? A little extra time now will save alot of headaches later. I had someone tell me to cut a rubber seal, install and spin the cut edge to the top of seal holder. Can the groove on the crank be machined out? Let me know Thanks

Sometimes the rear seal leak is not the felt but a warped pot metal retainer. I managed to find a good flat used one for one of my tractors. Maybe it could be machined flat again but have not tried it. Put the retainer up against something flat without a gasket and see if there is a gap between the bolt holes.
good luck
