melted gounds on IH 460 GAS MOTOR HELP!!!

so I was driving the other day and motor stopped running.. yes I checked fuel and was fine..... narrowed it down to no spark in the plugs

I bought a new coil, starter button, and new ignition for it and I thought I had all the wiring correct
I took the NEG from coil to the neg on the ammeter and when I turned the key and started cranking it over I completed melted the wire insolation to distrubtor from coil and groun from coil to ammeter

so what am I doing wrong???
I attempted to wire everything correctly but I guess I did not do something right

also is there a way I can just get power to the key and starter button and to coil I can do with out gauges for all I care im more of an operational guy not cosmetics

haha yea my wiring I did with the wiring diagram that"s in my head looks nothing like this....I will be attempting your way as soon as day break comes....thank you

one other thing I was looking and my coil has a built in rerstritor so do I run one to my starter off the coil from the positive side as well as run one from positive side of coil to starter button????

There are no resistors in coils. The common (incorrect) thinking is that if some coils have resistors in the circuits leading to them, that those indicating they don"t need an external resistor have one inside. The internal coils are just wound with more and thinner wire to handle higher voltage at the same current levels.
If your coil says it does not need and external resistor do not use one. However!! the reason the original wiring diagram has a resistor in it, and the reason it is important is that the ignition bypass circuit (from starter solenoid to the coil side of the resistor) is used to provide cranking voltage to the coil while the engine is being started. This bypass increases the voltage at the "resistor required" coil, putting hot spark to the plugs. If a coil with no resistor required is used, that wire does nothing and the 12volt coil is operating on the 10 volts available when the engine is being cranked. This produces less spark and sometimes no start.

ok jim I have hooked everything up according to the wire diagrams except my lights because it used to start with out them anyways but no spark with a restritor and with out I took a test light and have power to everything so im not understanding on why I have no spark I have checked the points and timeing and all seem to be ok I even took the distributor cap off and watched to make sure my points were coming in and out of contact with each other..... im stumped

what could it be

getting ready to haul it to the auction

ok also can a restritor go bad all I see its made of is a spring with a ceramic box to hold it all together

It is a "spring" in that it is a wire wound ceramic insulated length of nichrome wire like in a toaster.
They can go bed and can be burned up (especially if shorted to ground like yours might have been, They usually have about 2 ohms of resistance. They can seem good when not in a circuit, but when loaded with 3 to 4 amps, they will open and not conduct electrons. If the wire is good and mechanically connected to the terminals it is good. Jim

well when I took my test light to the side from starter button I had a full bright light and on the other side of the restrictor I had a dull not so bright light.....so I tried it both ways with new coil and still no luck and I even tried putting old coil back on I replace all wores that were dry rotted some the same awg and some not but still power is power correct????

just think I may call case ih and have them charge me a butt load to figure out my problem mean there are only a certain amount of compentents it could be in thery correct?

new gen
new coil
new wires
new ammeter
new starter button
new ignition

the only thing I think maybe could be the old VOLTAGE REGULATOR
but I have power to and from

The only wires from the start button should go the the starter Start terminal on the starter motor solenoid, not to the ballast resistor. The ballast resistor gets power from the key Ignition switch.
I don"t think a trip to the dealer is needed. I think you need a friend that understands electrical diagrams and a bit more time. Buy the person a case of cold malted beverages, and get the diagram I sent printed for reference. Jim
