Finally joined the red power ranks!

Hey all! I finally got myself a new toy... A 1946 H. Its in decent shape, though needs some TLC. It was converted to a 12v setup at some point in it's life, and whoever did so cut out the hood for the alternator. The guy I bought it from put a different hood on it, but I need to get a proper alternator bracket because the hood doesn't sit at the moment.

It needs some TLC for sure. Somebody gave it a pretty bad rattle-can spray job. Tire's aren't the greatest but if I waited to find one with perfect tires I may wait forever, and spend a lot more for the tractor.

I'm trying to attach a picture, but it tells me that "posting is disabled"... we'll see if it works or not.

Anyway, I'm happy with it, and that's what matters. :D

Congrats on your purchase.

As a young kid, I always turned my nose up at the lowly Farmall h's. Yes I was a tractor snob back then. Now that I am middle aged and own a Farmall h myself, I appreciate them for what they are. Simple, reliable, fuel misers frequently capable of outworking their meager hp ratings. Really an overall great machine relative to the technology of when they were designed and manufactured.

If yours is anything like my ole junker Farmall h then it is likely to bring you many many hours of enjoyment.

The gen bracket can be turned over (upside down) and a correct length belt can make a Delco fit. A Hitachi 14231 it is smaller and has good output. The connections are the same as a Delco. S terminal is equal to Delco #2 L terminal = #1. Jim

The Hitachi fits right under the hood.

Charlies repair makes a nice conversion kit with the correct alternator and brackets.

The OP has been a member since August 2013 (although post count is few). Should be okay to post pics with a membership dating back that far I would think. Likely not doing something quite correctly.

Some time ago I fitted a Delco 10SI alternator to my "50 H, and the hood closes but only clears the alternator by a dollar-bill"s thickness. Fits but just barely.
CharlieU sells a dioade assembly that helps them charge correctly, for minimal bucks.
Some of the best things about the "H is everything is right up there at chest level, you can work on anyhting. Also how high up you ride, you can look down, it"s great.

Many years ago I did all three tractors on the farm and used the smallest altinator that I could find. Most likely you can get them from NAPA etc. The AMC altinators on the 6cyl cars were a 35 amp Motorola with a little external solidstate regulator block that mounted to the fender wall. I would cut a piece of pipe to take up the slack from the old generator bracket and then run a wire back for the dashboard idiot light. The one tractor that is still left has worked great since 1980-or so. Jeffcat

Thanks for the suggestion. I didnt see a feedback form, so I did a "report to moderator". We'll see what happens.

I've not posted much since I've not had a tractor or reason to ask a lot of questions .

Anyway, Ive read from other posts that the first "to do" when buying an H (or other tractor) is to buy the manuals. I plan on doing this, but am curious as to which ones to get. The most obvious (and what I had planned on getting) was the Service Manual that YT sells (Part No: IH_H,HV_SV). But what other manual(s) would be a good idea to get? They ship for free if I buy 2 or more, so I might as well buy 2, right? Probably the Parts Manual (Part No: IH_H,HV_PT)?

thanks in advance! Glad to now be (officially) part of a community with so much knowledge. I'll try to keep the level of "stupid" questions to a minimum

thanks,

The owners manual is also chocked full of content important to the operation and maintenance. The parts manual is on line at caseih.com parts, (keep going in the menues till yuou put in Farmall H

Ok, I think I've gotten the picture posting issue resolved (Thanks Moderators!). So here it is...

It's not perfect, but it's mine and that's what matters :D
