Just checked 300 about a real bad miss pulled valve cover and seen that #1 cylinder had a rod out of place and spring stuck in down position. I"m pretty shore Thai is the cause of it running like a old john Deere!

Here's push rod

guessing the valve is sticking (thats why the valve spring is not coming up). valve needs freed up. push rod put back in place and clearance set. My advice, or maybe you not asking and just posting an update.

(quoted from post at 14:23:10 04/14/14) Yes I checked the valve and it's fine after I freed it but I'm asking would that cause It to run like that

Well gee, one valve is completely stuck in the open position, which means that particular cylinder is making no compression at all. The piston is basically just going along for the ride and doing NO work at all. So what do YOU think?

That stuck open exhaust valve will cause dramatic backfire and 3 cylinder running. Adjust all valves while it is apart! Jim

Probably carboned up,or got old sludgy oil on the stem. Last one I had that did that,I washed it out with PB blaster till it was nice and free.Tapped it with a soft hammer to 'work it in'.Laid the pusk rod on my steel work table and tapped it straight, works just fine now.

I'll be nice (unlike the other post). The cylinder with froze valve would be a dead cylinder because of no compression. The tractor was likely running on only 3 cylinders with your valve like that. Also, your push rod would of popped out of the rocker arm because of the froze valve. Another point of advice would be to set all valve clearances while you are at it. Remember to have the cylinder your setting valve clearances on to be at top dead center of compression stroke (not top of exhaust) when setting the clearances. Set both exhaust and intake for that cylinder, then rotate another cylinder to top center of compression and set those, and so forth.

one of those....dang, that was easy..

picked up a C with good tires at auction a few years ago, very cheap.
When the auctioneer started it...barely..it ran just awful.
Got it home and pulled the valve cover...same deal, pushrod off.
cleaned it up and adjusted the valves, dropped the pan and cleaned it and checked the bottom end. all good.
done! good runner

He wants to know, WHAT CAUSES VALVES TO STICK?

Running the engine too hot, not running the engine for a long time, not maintaining the engine... All can cause valves to stick.

Normally only 5 months wouldn't cause a stuck valve unless other conditions are also present.

You have no idea how the tractor was treated before you got it. The picture of the head shows a lot of oil and combustion residue.

Gas that has been in tank for a long time ie turned to a varnish like substance can cause valves to stick. I have a super c that sat for years, had bad gas, started without cleaning the gas tank, bad idea had to pull the head, the man at the machine shop told me the head was gunked up with varnish after a good soak all was well.
