Crank Shaft Bearing

Some IH can have the rear main replaced W/O pulling the engine, but not the rear main to the best of my knowledge. Jim

What's the condition of the pistons? If the bearings are worn your crankshaft may be worn and should be measured. That means the crankshaft needs to removed. Hal

Jim,

I always enjoy reading your posts and learning from your knowledge. You are a wealth and speak pearls.

But, what is this?

"Some IH can have the rear main replaced W/O pulling the engine, but not the rear main to the best of my knowledge."

I is a bit confused.

Rear Main Seal For got one word! I was interupted by students trying to use a lab that they didn"t have permission to use. Rolling in a rear main can be done on some, Not so the seal. Jim
And thanks for the vote. Jim

you should specify what you are working on or referring to before the confusion get too big.
brgs.- yes
seals- usually no, unless you have a rope seal.
if you are referring to an old 390 ford then the answers are yes to both.

Sorry about that. I should have remembered to say what it is. 1941 Farmall H. It has a knock when I first start it up. Maybe 3 knocks and then sounds ok for the rest of the day. Oil pressure seems ok and it doesn't use or leak much oil. Only reason I want to drop the pan is to make sure it's not rod or main bearing. I guess it could be in the front of the motor also. First season with this tractor. I just picked 9 acres of corn and it worked well. Used maybe a pint of oil. Every now and then it takes a fit and blows blue smoke for a couple minutes but then clears up.

you may have excessive brg. clearance. good idea to check your brgs. the one furthest from the pump will have the most wear. you will hear this knock on start up till the brgs fill with oil.
