SO TRUE!!!

Just last night I was in O'reilly getting some stuff and thought to inquire about a head gasket for my Briggs and Stratton 5 hp flathead (standard engine they've made for years). I might need one soon, but wasn't in desperate need at the time, but still wanted to see if they had one or how much one was. I asked the guy "Do ya'll have a head gasket for a Briggs and Stratton 5 hp Flat Head....the standard engine they've made for years". Yes, I know I didn't have the Model/Type/Code numbers with me, but you'd think he would have some sort of a clue as to what I was talking about and could use a reference book if he didn't know enough to look it up.

The guy said "ok" and typed a couple things in the computer. Then he looked up and said...."Is this for a Car or Truck"? I said, "Um....it is a Briggs and Stratton 5 hp like on a go cart or push mower". He said, "oh ok, hold on". He typed a few more things in the computer, and looked up with disbelief and said, "I'm sorry but I've never heard of what you're talking about, so I'm gonna have to let you talk to my boss".

I wanted to punch him right in the face!!!! Ugghhhhhh

It goes like this, and no I am not being ridiculous:

ME: I want a 3/4" washer

AZ: a 3/4 what?

ME: washer

AZ: Let me look that up (types away)

AZ: We wouldn't have anything like that, what car did it come off from?

ME: 1947 Farmall B

AZ: Huh?

ME: A Farmall tractor

AZ: OOOOHHHHH, a TRACTOR! Yeah, we wouldn't have that....you need to go to TSC.

ME: Have YOU been to TSC lately? They don't sell tractor parts!!!!

Word to the wise: When they ask what car it came off from tell them anything but a tractor because once you do....you're done.

Talk about wanting to punch a guy in the face, I was at the local John Deere dealership the other day (I know that was my first mistake) and I asked this young guy at the parts counter for a castle nut for the connecting rod on a John Deere H. First he tried to tell me that Deere didn't make an H. Then after about 20 minutes of him lollygaging around he asked if I could point to it on the computer. He turned it around and he had been looking for a tie rod nut and the picture wasn't even of an H. I just turned around and walked out without saying a word.

Hi guys. Listen, I"m not trying to stir the pot or cause any hard feelings, or heaven forbid, make anyone mad. But....why aren"t you going to the local hardware store for your 3/4" washer? Or a small engine shop for your Briggs Stratton head gasket? Or, even taking a moment to look the part number up on the John Deere H castle nut before driving all the way to the dealership, and expecting some young man who is just trying to make a living working behind the counter, try to look up a small part for a 70 year old tractor! I know all you guys have a computer, and most all this stuff is available to purchase on-line. Just my 2 cents, as I"m a parts counter man at our local John Deere dealer.

I'm not a parts man, just a customer, but I do agree with you 100%. Although I will say that some of the parts diagrams I've seen on line are somewhat hard to read and understand if you are not a parts man.

JD dealer we bought the 5303 off of consistantly gives us the wrong filters and such and they sold it. can"t get it thru their
head it mexican built.takes several minutes of checking and discussion before you get the right stuff, I had the part no.s last time and they still argue about it

So John Deere doesn't have common hardware items in stock? Or repair parts for a very common engine that may have been furnished on a lawn mower or power washer sold by John Deere?

Anymore I try to buy parts online whenever possible. Store websites will often check inventory at local stores and tell me how many are available at which location. If none are available locally, I have the option of either free shipping to the closest store, or pay a small charge to have it delivered to my home.

Well rusty farmall....if you had read the previous
posts thoroughly, you would have noticed that the
guys were complaining that they could not get 3/4"
washers or 5hp flat head Briggs head gaskets at
their local Autozone, or O"Reily"s. Not John
Deere! Seems that many people don"t realize just
how many thousands of models of equipment there
really are, and that stocking every single part is
not only expensive, but would take a HUGE
warehouse. Perhaps the dealer did have the head
gasket, but unless the guy working the counter
knew EXACTLY where it was, or had the part number,
its IMPOSSIBLE to walk around the warehouse,
peeking into every parts bin, trying to find it!
Its real easy to get frustrated as a customer,
until you try standing on the other side of the
counter for a day!
