Farmall M Starter Question

Thanks guys for all the replies. I dropped the starter off this morning so I should get the prognosis soon.

Original Post:

The starter from my Farmall M does not turn at all when power is applied directly using a battery charger. Starter is off tractor and on the floor. I"ve tried tapping on the starter case with a hammer and that only changes it from drawing no current to pegging the battery charger out at full amperage draw.

I"ve got a place that does good work on these old electronics, but am wondering if there is something easy inside that could be fixed or does it need a rebuild?

Tractor is still 6V positive ground.

You'll never know until you open it up. The starter on my M just up and quit one day. I took it apart, and found old grease, dirt, and material from the brushes all packed in around the brush mounting holders on the end plate. Cleaned all of that stuff off, put a dab of fresh grease into the bushing, and all was well again. Only cost was a little time.

Mine just did the same thing about 2 weeks ago. Wouldn't do anything with charger until I tapped it with hammer then would only run about 1/2 speed. Took it to rebuild shop, 1 brush holder spring broke and new brushes works fine now. All for $42.00.

I would not necessarily think a battery charger would supply enough juice to operate the starter when hooked direct to starter on the floor. A little charger could be as few as 2 amps.

Use jumper cables hooked to a good charged battery. Then go direct to starter with jumper cables. (note: place battery as far away from starter as you can so sparks from you touching the starter with jumper cables does not accidentally ignite battery offgassing).

Thanks for the reply. I started at the 6V 30 A setting on the charger and then worked up to the jump start setting. That should have made it at least make a noise if the starter had any life.

There is NO way a 30A charger will even attempt to turn the starter, hook it to a known good battery with cables.

A charger with jump start capabilities will run that starter on the bench, however, I hate using chargers to do that. They only draw 50 to 75 amps no load.

just take it in and have it gone through. it may only need a cleaning with bushings and brushes , but once apart the story is told.
