I posted this question on implement alley but didn"t get any
response, so I thought I would ask it here.
Does anyone know when IH built the 428 square baler, were
they a very good baler or did they have issues. Were they
about the same as a 430 or 440 IH baler

Never heard of a 428 baler. Is it a late one?The real late ones were made by NewHolland. They had IH decals. The inlines from the 90s were made by AGCO.They were decaled as CaseIH.There hasnt been a 'true' IH baler since the early 80s.

428T built in 84 and 85 new listed for 8000. made bales from 12'' to 48''.Do not know anything about them I have a 430 all twine with wide pickup been a good bailer.

I beleive it was the same era as the 435 and 445 balers. They shared the same knotters but they actually produced a smaller bale than "standard" and were a lower output machine (think "27" baler). My understanding is very few were produced and they were dropped in the early 80s before (during?) the the merger with Case.

I've never seen one in operation and I have only seen one in person. As to how they operate - the big weakness with all IH balers was the knotters - by the 440 and 430 series they were worked out with the "All Twine" knotter that was an option and became standard on the 445 and 435 balers. Some 47 and 37 balers I've seen advertised with the "all twine" knotters retro fitted.

From what I can find they started making them around 86-87 which tells me they were produced after IH was sold off, I found one and it is red with black trim, decaled with international"s name. It looks a lot like the 430 440 series. I"m like you, never saw one before. I would like to find out more about them, it is a nice looking baler.

My dad bought one brand new in the mid-late 80"s. Very good baler. No problems. It did say case/ih on it. He paid I think 7500-8300 at the time. Some where in that amount. No thrower on it.It replaced a ih 46 that my grandpa bought brand new
