706 PTO cover removal

I'm having a heck of a time getting the PTO cover off the 706 I'm working on. I took out the bolts and broke the seal loose. I got the cover off the housing about a half inch and now it won't go any further. All I'm doing is replacing the leaking lower seal in the cover. Any suggestions on what I'm. not doing or what I'm doingg wrong? I read through a few posts and I'm not seeing anything.

Bud,you messed up....You need to remove the entire unit, not the 'cover'.There is a snap ring(s) in there.Beware, those things are heavy You REALLY NEED a book!

well that ain't good. How do I get the whole unit out? I know it has to be fixed before winter months here by lake superior and that's soon. I would like to get manuals for all these tractors so I can use them.

Hook a chain and hoist to unit. Remove the bolts around the houseing. While supporting the unit, pull out while pushing the rear of the unit downward. A pipe on the shaft is helpfull.Remove the toplink bracket to observe.Order a service manual today(from YT),go no further till you READ it!A neighbor did exactly the same thing as you. Hooked a puller to the 'cover',broke it.Cost him a lot of money tha he did not have to spend.

Thanks for the advise. I didn't use a puller for fear of cracking the cover. So now I know. I will get a service manual for it asap. Big problem being there is no dealers around here in the Upper Peninsula here in Michigan. I will look up where I can get one. Ill start onn ebay. Thanks again

YT sells manuals.Good prices. The sale of parts is what pays for this site. 'BinderBooks' in Oregon is another scource

I have someone to help me when it comes out. Ill get the manual and get this all back and going. I tried to get this advise too late but I also diddnt harm aanything. i see a large variety of manuals and it looks like i can get it and have all the pto information there. Again, Thanks.

Another thing it is too late for is that Hy-Capacity has a replacement seal that screws into the threads in the housing around the 540 shaft that allows you to add an additional seal to replace the leaking one. At this point you would most likely have leak from the gasket if were to just bolt to back together.
