544 Spark Plugs

Hello, I have a 544 or a 2544 don't know other than it having 2544 # plates. The tractor don't have a serial number plate. It has the c200 gas engine which I have rebuilt and have been using since last fall and this year raking hay. The spark plugs in it are tapered seat Autolite 45. The plugs looked pretty good after I rebuilt it so I decided to use them to plug the holes while I painted the engine and just left them in for initial start up. I want to install the Petronix ignition and coil so I picked up new plugs at napa. They gave me champion ??18 which are washer type. Everywhere I have looked, books and parts stores, etc say a washer type is used ie: Autolite 386. The head also has a taper. Any Ideas? Thanks, Kent

Is tractor yellow(could heve been repainted red)with 'industrial' parts?IE-utility style, heavy nonadjustable front, different hitch,different/odd tires;trans reverser.....it would be a 2544.Is it red with adjustable front,ag type hitch, tractor tires? it could be a rowcrop(farmall) or a utility version. It would be a544.Baisicly 2544 is the 'industrial' version of the 544 'farm' tractor. It would be utility style. The 'farm' 544 tractor could be either utility or rowcrop.

Tractor has red on top of yellow. It is a utility with the heavy adjustable front end. It is a straight gear without reverser. Has a normal 3-point and drawbar. Either way would the C200 take the same plugs?

Am confused as to why it has tapered seat plugs when everything I find says washer type flat seat. Is or has there been a serial number break where some had flat and then taper?

I have yet to encounter an IH gasoline powered tractor made after 1939 that did not use washer type spark plugs.

Of course, we have no idea what has been done to your tractor over the last 40 years. Some people have odd proclivities. A previous owner may have had the head machined for tapered spark plugs, possibly because he did not "trust" the washers to seal properly.

It appears autolite 45 plugs are still available. Frankly, I would just go and ask for those specifically. Why mess with success?

I was thinking the same thing about going back with the Autolite 45's. I am going to use it this fall to plow @5 ac or so and want to have options if it isn't burning correct so I can go up or down in heat range. It had to be bored 40 oversize and the crank was pretty much shot and no one would touch it but a older gentleman that is retired was called in to a shop to see what he could do with it and I think it is 40 or 60 undersize, cant remember which. He went as far as he could and still get me bearings. Still has some groves in rods but not bad enough to worry me too much so I bumped up the oil pressure a bit. After all it only turns 2200 rpm. Thanks for the help, Kent
