560 slugish

So since I have had my 560 diesel it never seemed as smooth or as responsive as my 460 gas or 460 diesel and I know this is odd but didn't sound as good with a straight pipe as the other two tractors
Well last night I was playing around with different thing and it seemed that the return line fron injector pump to fuel tank was plugged I blew air through it and got it cleared it to me sounds nice and smooth and responsive now and I put straight pipe on and it sounds good It also blows black smoke now when working before it was greyish
Ok am I nuts or is this sound like I acctually fixed it?
Thanks dan

You have found the problem!! Now what cause the problem!! More than likly the weight retainer ring is disseneraging . With the line open, the return will release the pressure in the pump housing and the 2 plungers will travel out farther and come in contact with the cam ring. This addition plunger travel will deliver more fuel, buttttt this could happen again!!, in the near future. Need to get a repair kit or take it to a injection pump shop. Hope this helps.

It seemed to be plugged in the line near the tank maybe even the little check valve was stuck? It does work. Tractor did sit for a few years I was told
Like I said it never sounded quit right to me but did seem to have good power I have not had a chance to take it out and work it other than run it down the road and pull the hill back home which I can usually get a pretty good feel for power on it that way it's a pretty good grade with 3 short steep spots in it

Original pumps on the 560 did not have that flex ring that always fails in later models. Of course , it could have been installed at sometime in it's life. Those spring loaded check valves in the return line at the tank do give trouble sometimes. Fact is we lost the sale of a spanking new 560 due to the ball going through the spring and partially plugging the return.
You can easily tell if something in pump is causing plugging by taking the timing window off side of pump carefully and examine for small particles of plastic.

Does that check valve have to be there. Recently took the return line off of the pump and the fuel kept flowing out of it. Never slowed down. To me it looks like all that is at the tank side of the return line is an elbow fitting. Where is that check valve actually at. Is it in the tank. The reason I am asking is that when I am running my 560 diesel above pto rpm it seems to surge. Took the sight window off of the pump and didn't see any signs of the washer falling apart. Wasn't sure what to really check next. Tractor starts and runs good up to that rpm and then I notice the surge. Thanks
