Busted TA pressure plate

Dad's 656; we call it the gift that keeps on giving.

It wasn't shifting right so Dad started pulling inspection covers. He found that the TA pressure plate is SPLIT right perfectly in half.

Both the TA and main clutch are wore BAD, deep grooves right into the flywheel and pressure plates. Tach only shows 5500, and is working.

What kind of abuse would cause a TA pressure plate to split like that?

Slipping that clutch by slowly moving the lever, or if it was worn and slipping it could over heat and crack. Beyond that I have no idea. If both are worn, (not an accusation) it could be from using the clutch as a speed control. We hired a man in 1960 to work ground. he tore the clutch out of our SH in 2 hours by slipping it to slow for corners pulling a 16 ft spike drag. Jm

I have seen a TA clutch come right out the top of the cover when pull starting. Get up a good speed with lever back, realize it isn't turning engine, then dropping lever ahead, bam. Far as clutch wear, operator.

Thanks. For the record this is a "barn find" tractor Dad bought in non-running condition back in the spring. It looked like it was well cared for, nice tight pedals and near-perfect sheet metal.

We had it running in two hours, but then found out it wouldn't steer to the left. Of course it wasn't something easy like the hand pump or the pilot valve. Someone tried to rebuild the wet bolster in the past and cut up the o-rings putting it back together.

Got that fixed and discovered that it didn't like to shift. That's when he found this mess.

The 3pt system is all messed up on top of that. Dad pulled the seat off and found pieces floating loose inside, so that's got to come off once the clutch/TA situation is fixed.
