504 versus 460

I am looking at getting another tractor to add to my collection. I am looking for a 504 or 460. I know there are advantages and disadvantages to both. I will not be using this on a farm per say, but to us on plow days, parades, etc. I know I want power steering and preferably a fast hitch.

I am looking for opinions from others who know a whole more about them than me.

Any help or opinion is appreciated.

Thanks

Both are similar in HP.504 is a bit more modern. For
what you want to do,460 would be my choice. But,I
really like 460/560 tractors.IMHO,504s are junk.

I like both Tractors. If the 504 was the one I found I would only want the Farmall (row crop) not the utility. I would prefer the 3 point, only because of availability of more affordable implements compared to Fast Hitch. Don't get me wrong, I love Fast Hitch but because of implement choices that I stated the 3 point wins out.

I love the 4-560 as I was a teenager when they came out and loved the look and 6 cylinder engine from the start. And I still do even with the initial problems that came with their intro. I would only want a 460 gas as the diesel was hard to start. Many things to look out for and would still like to have a 460 G. However at this point in my life I would prefer a Farmall 504 over the 460. Just my opinion.

These were some of IH's early attempts at making horsepower using RPMs instead of engine displacement. Neither tractor is a torque monster as a gasser, but if you keep the RPMs up they do just fine in the field.

I've heard a lot about the 504s and 460s being gutless from people around where I grew up. That could be because farmers were used to being able to lug their M's right down to the last RPM

I think IH made a mistake when they did not stay with the 3** or 4** designation, as I believe many people at that time thought the 460 replaced the 450, whereas the 460 replaced the 350 and the 560 replaced the 450. If you expected the 460 to pull what the 450 did, you were highly disappointed.
That said, Dad had a 460 and pulled a 3x16" plow or an 11 1/2' disk with no problem in our sandy loam soil. I worked on a ranch one summer and we pulled a 5x14" plow with a 450 gas in dry land wheat stubble or a 3x16" Fast Hitch plow in heavier irrigated corn ground. One of my nephews still has Dad's 460.

From the way I've understood things, IH intended the 460 to be the replacement for the 450, and the 560 to be a whole new level of power.

The 560 was introduced as the "new" M.

thanks everyone for the comments to date. I am leaning towards a 460 for what I will do with it (plow days, etc.).
