600D Cylinder Head Question?

Can someone confirm which cylinder head is correct for a 600D? I have a 600D project tractor with the straight injectors and head 278292R1. I would have expected that a 600D would have had the angled injectors possibly with head 260692R7 or 278292R2. Also, does anyone know if the angled injectors will only fit the 260692R7 or 278292R2 head?

I know that most of the heads will work on the tractor but I want to do a complete restoration using the correct cylinder head since these tractors are rare. Right now, I am wondering if a previous owner has replaced the original head and injectors with one from a WD-9 or Super WD-9 which will work fine, but it may not be correct.

Depends on engine serial numbers on production tractors. Open type nozzles started engine serial number 8927 in a 600. Think that would be in September 56. Head 278292R1 started D-350 serial # 11378. Think those started in November of 57 in a 650. Have information that head 260292R5 was changed to R6 D-350 serial 6689 in a SWD9. Can't find when 260292r6 was changed to R7. That's probably the date you need to figure out what was original to the 600.
Think the only change needed to have the angled injector inlet on those heads was to change the injector holder. IH did make a change over package to put open type nozzles in non angled holders.

Thank you for the excellent response. Great info, I will have to get the S/N's off of the tractor and try to figure it out from there. The big thing is that the 600 was available with the straight injectors.

[b:5000c4dc19]Stupid question:[/b:5000c4dc19] If the angled injectors were called "open type nozzles" would the straight injectors be called "closed type nozzles? What was actually the difference between the two types of nozzles? I have never had to do anything with the nozzles in my tractors so I would like to know.

My original parts manual for the 600 shows them
with the angle injector lines and open face
injectors, both my 600's have the straight lines
and closed face injectors. My 650 has the angle
lines and correct injectors. I think for
restoration you will be correct either way.

Maybe this picture will keep me from doing a bunch of typing. Hope you can read it.
Look for serial numbers on the engine block.

DSlater--thanks, I can read that page easily. I have even printed it to keep on file. Again, really good info!

WOpp--thanks for your comments on the injectors on your 600D tractors. It is good to get a response from you.

Didn't think to add to the other post that the change has already happened at the factory most times before the bulletin is dated.
Think tractors built in September 56 was when the change happened on factory built tractors.
