C-221 Intermediate Knock Update...Kind Of

Hey guys! Finally warmed up here so was able to work on the tractor a little. I warmed the tractor up and tried a mechanics stethoscope...can't hear a definitive knock with it, but can hear different tone in the center of the oil pan vs the outer edges. Everything else sounds consistent throughout. Not sure if the different tone is a bearing or just from the oil pump. I drained the oil, its black but looks fine otherwise; no metallic sparkle or metal filings. Can't get the pan off with the wide front on. Lowered it about 2", can't see much but what I can looks normal.

Any thoughts or where should I go next?

Thanks!

I don't think the microscopic metal particles , from the bearings, is not going to be visible,in the cold engine oil. Chances are the metal particles,
are still in the bottom of the oil pan, they wont come out with cold oil, is my experience.
Or was the oil hot when u dropped it ??

Engine/oil was warm when I drained it. Going to clean what I can out of the bottom of the pan today and check the filter.

Main bearings are much harder to detect as they are a "deeper" sound. You need to get that pan off and plastiguage the mains and rods. That's the only way to know or avert a sudden window through the side of your block - that would ruin your day.

I had an M that had a HUGE amount of rod slop. I never knew it because the oil was thick enough most of the time to hide it. When it was truly warmed up good it knocked like never before. Never sitting still and running, only during a pull. I ripped it apart and the crank was completely toast.

pull and inspect rod brgs. first and plastigage them. even if you have someone rock the engine slightly back and forth with a wrench on front pulley while you are inspecting each rod, excessive clearance will show up.
