Ferguson to 35 tractor 6 to 12 volt electrical conversion

So you need a battery then, correct? Have you been looking locally for one?
The tach drive is a multitude of choices. Original or alternator upgrade?
You sure your desiring 12V and not 8? Yes, they do make 8V batteries.
Why are you changing? 6V pos ground has a hotter spark at the plugs.
Triodiode has your field windings for the genny upgrade on fleabay.
Look before you leap. Leaping may yield undesirable results.

One wire alternator is what you need. Easy to wire. Don't have to use regulator. Go to
FENA web--fergusontrators.org--go to resources then wiring diagram.Someone may give you the diagram on this site.

I thought converting from 6 volt to 12 volt would Allow tractor to start better in cold weather.
Looked in to 8 volt batteries but was told needed to have an 8 volt battery charger to charge it .
Also , more options for lights with 12 volt.

My TO20 is still 6volt. It starts
excellent in cold weather as low as 10
degrees F. AND HAS for over 20 years. U
have other problems if it's not starting in
cold weather.
BTW, my TO 20 sets OUTDOORS 24-7 for the
last 20 years to. Covered with a good
cover but OUTSIDE here in Middle Tennesse.
And yes, it can get damned cold here in the
winter.
U got other problems if it's not
starting that 12v conversion won't help.

I believe my 6 volt starter is bad and thought now would be time to upgrade to 12 volt system as 12 volt is more reliable.

You can get an alternator with tach drive from this site. Problem is, the only one they offer requires an external regulator. No big deal, just that the regulator is mechanical, something else to go wrong. You will need to do some wiring modifications, and fab a mount. It is essential the alternator be mounted with the pulley properly aligned.

As others said, keeping it 6 volt has it's advantages. However, the 6v system will only work if everything is right and the engine is properly tuned for easy starting.

If your charging system is working, it would be easier to just fix the starter and keep it 6 volt. The starter may only need bushings and brushes, something that can easily be done by a starter/generator shop. A common mistake found on 6v systems is the cables have been replaced with automotive cables. Automotive cables are much too small. A 6v system needs size 0 or 00 cables to carry the high amperage. Also the original ground strap connected to the sheet metal behind the battery. A better ground is connecting the cable directly to the engine block.

I would stay completely away from the 8 volt option. Little to gain, the regulator would have to be adjusted to gain anything at all. 8v batteries are slow movers, likely the one you buy has been on the shelf for years.

?6V pos ground has a hotter spark at the plugs.?

A properly configured conversion to 12 volts should see little if any difference in spark at the plugs.

If he were to convert to 12 volts, and add a resistor in series that is approximately equal to the resistance of his 6 volt coil primary (usually 1 ? ohms), or change to a direct 12 volt (no resistor required) coil, he would maintain the present 4 amp current flow through the coil.

And, if he changes to 12 volt negative ground, he can maintain the spark plug polarity by connecting the negative post of the coil primary to the side of the distributor where it grounds through the points.

Most likely what is REALLY going here is that he wants to convert to electronic ignition of some sort.
WHICHMEANS the distributor bushings are worn and causing the points to have arbitrary gap when running.

Much of this 6 to 12 v conversion that so many vintage vehicle owners want is just alot of "much to do about nothing". An attempt to over come a bigger problem that they can't figure out.

Most likely, it is very worn distributor bushings causing the hard starting and perhaps even sudden stalling of engine with out notice or warning.
