I have an 8-N that is just not worth the money to rebuild it. The question is,will the Sherman from the N fit a To20?

not without modification - the case has to be relieved to fit over the countershaft bearing cap and the shifter housing interferes with the reverse/starter shaft coming out of the transmission -

check out this thread http://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/viewtopic.php?t=1343492 - and this one http://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/viewtopic.php?t=1343049 where Kirk-NJ has a Ferguson modified Sherman case for trade -

By over under I am assuming you are talking about the sherman combo trans. To be clear in the photo on the right side is the sherman combo handle and on the left is the step up or step down handle. If you have the sherman combo in your ford then yes the case would need to be altered. If you have the handle on the right then it's a step up or step down and may not need to be altered. I have never put a step up/down sherman in a ferguson so I can't say for sure. I have step up models on the bench and TO trans case out behind the barn. I can slap it in and check for fitness. My email is open in classic view.

Mine is a step up/step down. I have been trying to find our TO 20 that dad sold in 1974,if I find it I want it back. And I heave this old 8 N that is shot, needs tires 4,rims I did get it started but it needs a complete rebuild. The hood and fenders are rotted. So I was just thinking out loud about what if.

It can't be both. It will either be a step up or step down. They both use the same handle. The step down is worth 3 to 4 times as much as the step up. To determine what you have hit the link to watch this video. If the tractor is run pull handle back to engage the sherman.

It is the handle on the right. It has over drive, under drive, and direct. While I have never driven this tractor, I did jack it up and spun the rear tires while watching the PTO speed.
