Steering gear problem TED20

I've changed the clutch on my TED20, but when trying to reconnect the drag links to the steering arm I encountered a problem. The links did not seem to meet the steering arms and I started fiddling with it...

In the process I've managed to over rotate the steering wheel until the gears on the pitman arms are disengaged from the steering wheel pinion. One arm is fully forward and one is fully back, and the steering wheel spins freely.

I tried pressing down on the arms and turning the wheel the opposite direction, but I could not get it to engage.

Any tips on how re-engage the the gears?

Lift the front wheels off the floor . Pick up both drop arms from the steering box and lift as high as they go . Rock steering wheel.a little then drop both arms together and evenly . It helps to place the steering wheel in the correct or preferred position first .

Thanks Charles that is very helpful for reconnecting the drag links to the steering arms. But my immediate problem is that the steering wheel pinion has become disconnected form the gears attached to the pitman arms, and the steering wheel now spins freely.

I would have thought that pressing on the pitman arms and rotating the the wheel would allow the gears to connect, but I could not get it to work. I'm really hoping that I can fix this without tearing the steering box apart.

Possibly with the gears rotated beyond where they are used to running there is some binding.

There is a screw and jamb nut on each side of the steering gear housing that sets the gear lash.

Try backing each one off slightly to see if it will free up the gears.

With the gears free, you should be able to hold one side forward against the pinion, and the other side backward against the pinion. Have an assistant turn the wheel the opposite direction that would engage the gears until you feel each gear seat firmly in time with the pinion, then turn the wheel the correct direction while holding the gears in mesh.

Once the gears are in mesh, readjust the lash screws to take up excess lash but not bind.

Ok thanks all, I'll try these suggestions. Will report back but will probably be a couple of weeks until I get to it.
