TO35 generator/tachometer questions

I bought a TO35 with a 6' finish mower last week - it's pretty good, needs governor work and the Tractormeter isn't hooked up.

It has a fan cooled generator with a shaft that is not drilled for the drive gear - going thru the archives here I found a nice pictorial of drilling and tapping the shaft - http://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/viewtopic.php?t=894961 - which I can probably do/get done.

Two questions: I see references to different ratio gears in the drive unit that bolts to the back of the generator, but no explanation of how to decide which is appropriate for what application. Can anyone enlighten me on this? Depends on the diameter of the pulley I'm guessing?

All the pictures I've seen have the drive unit mounted on unventilated generators - this generator appears to be have holes, or at least index marks, to mount such a unit - see picture - so I think if I modify the shaft I would be able to attach the drive unit?

any comments? anything I'm missing? suggestions for another way?

Thanks -
David

I've never seen different ratio speed. The one I order is just standard. The armature
has to be drilled for tack gear to mount. I can't remember the size to drill and the
thread to tap it (32) I think. I'm sure someone will post.

From a parts vendor -

"Drives off of the rear of the generator
Includes 14 and 43 tooth gears
Count teeth before ordering
If 12 and 45 tooth gears are needed, then please see (link to part)"

actually, when I go to the 12/45 part, it's a similar looking drive, but looks like it's used on certain AC and Case tractors - so I guess that's the answer to that question -

another question - what's the diameter of the stock TO35 generator pulley? I deduce this tractor has a replacement generator that could have come from/for a number of engines, I should make sure the the pulley is correct or the tachometer will be off....

anybody?

thanks
David

I stopped by the generator place today while running errands - the guy there knows his stuff, works on a lot of vintage ag generators/starters/magnetos - he said that the commutator tapped for the tachometer gear is available - "Israeli, beautiful stuff" and my generator has the right bearing housing to mount a tachometer drive - he has the drive in stock, but not a commutator -

so, it's nothing money won't fix...
