steering gear housing

For manual steering, there should be a square head pipe plug up by the top where the steering tube bolts to the housing.

It originally probably had 90 or 140 gear oil. If the seals are in good shape that will work, but if it's showing some wear you can use NLGI 0 cartridge grease. This is a very soft grease, soft enough not to channel away from gears, but firm enough not to run out less than perfect seals.

If it's power steering with the assist cylinder built into the gear housing, the steering fluid lubricates it.

I just rebuilt a 40 and someone had put a grease sert in the plug on side so they could just fill with grease. I didn't change it and it steers great. You could do this.

I did a 50/50 mix of NGLI 00 grease, (also called John Deere corn head grease) mixed in a zip lock bag. Cut corner to fill through plug. Top collar got drilled/tapped 1/4-20(?) for a zerk and I replaced the dust seal under the steering wheel to help keep he grease in and the dirt out.
