Post Hole Digger Not Digging

Hi,
Using my Ferguson post hole digger on my TEA20 I found that initially it went well for 20cm then it just kept turning but not digging.
Looking in the hole, it was clay, and using a shovel was easy to dig.
Any reason why the post hole digger could not handle it?

Ta,
John

I've had a couple of times where the auger would start then stop. Just had to raise and lower it a couple of times to get it to bite into the next layer. How dry is the clay? If it's very dry it can be really hard. Maybe try adding some water? Not too much, don't want soup in there.

Teeth should look like this .

Does the auger have the cork screw end fitted , these often fall off ?

I've had grass-root get on bit and not dig. Also I've sharpen cutting edges.Like Inno said I always pick it up a
little every time I dig a hole. This also keeps it from going in to fast and not
being able for power lift bring it back out hole.I don't like turning auger out by
hand.LOL

My post hole digger has a place up on the gear box that I can place a long rod through
and then when it drilling you can put down pressure on the rod it helps .

Yea, sure would be nice to have down pressure on 3pt hitch when using a post hole digger,

Have you taken the auger cutter blades off and sharpen them?

If mine stops digging I raise and lower it a few times, normally it will bite in and dig properly,

I have problems with it wanting to suck into the ground,

A post hole digger is a nice tool to own, many times if people find out you have one, you will notice you will have a number of new friends,
But they may only want to borrow the digger, I normally tell them it?s broken,

Six holes I've dug all with clay to dirt to roots and stones soil.
Every time it starts easily, goes about half way up the digger and then stops going lower.
I've raised and dropped it no difference.
The tip looks OK though like a slasher blade the ends are blunt.
I've tried fast and slow.
Surely the tips of the auger do not need to be sharp?

John,
If it?s not digging to your satisfaction,
It could be like an old plow, if it has worn out points, they may look ok, but it will not go in the ground!

Points must have some negative cut so they will suck into the ground,

Take the points off, give them a good look, compare to a set of new post hole digger points, you may find they are very worn,

It?s worth a shot, can you attach or hang more weight to the digger to make it go in ground faster?

John , which model digger do you have ?

I am wondering if there is something going on in the lift attachment that is preventing it from lowering properly .
