Rod, Bern, Ford Farmer others, 8240 FWA problem

I have been having a problem for some two years that the front wheel assist will engage when the switch for it is off. It is my understanding that it is engaged by a spring and held released by hydraulic pressure. I believe that it started the summer of '13 after the transmission was rebuilt by a CNH dealer in the previous October. For some time I thought that it was electrical, caused by a bad connection close to where the wires for the control valve assembly go through the case. When I manipulated the connection, and then go try it out it would be better for awhile. In Sept. I pulled my mower over the road for about three miles with no problem but after mowing for two hours the FWA was engaged again. Now I am thinking that it was not electrical at all but instead a bad valve or a leak, and it leaks worse and releases pressure when the oil heats up. The tractor is a '93. They went to an external control valve in Sept. of 93, after mine was built. It has the 16x16 with 4 speed power shift and the FWA engagement assy. is inside. I am not able to bring up all of the trans. parts pages, but one that I found shows an hydraulic oil connector at the back end of the engaging assy. Most likely the whole trans. would have to be disassembled in order to get to that connection because it is at the bottom. I haven't been able to find the engagement spring in the diagrams. Parts for the control valve are not available, just the whole valve for $3300.00. If I take it to the dealer I expect I would be buying a new valve even if here is nothing wrong with it. Any body been into one of these?
