How to tell if I have a faulty fuel injector or pump

Hi, we are new to this site, so far we've been lucky when repairing our 3910 tractor (diesel) ourselves, but we have a question.

How does one tell whether the fuel injector is bad, or if it's the whole pump that costs a lot of money!!

Here is what is going on with it.

It now has to be started with starting fluid, so we don't use it unless necessary. It will run after starting with the fluid, but only full out. If you take it down to idle, it dies.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated, considering the big difference in the price of the injector itself, and sending the whole pump off to be worked on, no one around here works on them.

thanks so much,

Several things can cause the injector pump to act like what you describe, sticking metering valve, sticking regulator piston, beginning of cam ring lobe wear, when it's really worn engine won't even run as the plungers will no longer deliver fuel, sticking plungers also, worn blades and liner. The pump may be repairable IF the hydraulic head is not worn badly at the rotor ports. This is assuming there's good fuel flow to the injection pump..

Thank you..I will read this to my hubby.. geeee then it wouldn't pay to send off the pump just yet, if it could be something else...sad thing is there just isn't anyone close anymore, that works on tractors. Thanks again..
